A traditionally Sudanese peanut satay

Cook Time:

20 minutes

Can I adapt this easily as a vegetarian or vegan?

A spicy, tart, rich and very delicious dip, dakwa is traditionally an accompaniment to meat or chicken

  • ½ small white onion

  • 1 small lemon, squeezed

  • 100g crunchy peanut butter

  • 75ml hot water

  • ¾ teaspoon ground cumin

  • 1 teaspoon chilli powder (or more to taste)

  • ½ teaspoon  salt

  • Parsley for garnish

Step One

Finely dice the onion, the smaller the better

Step Two

Pour the lemon juice over the onion and set aside to soak for 10-15 minutes

Step Three

Beat the peanut butter and water together until fully combined

Step Four

Add the diced onions with the lemon juice, cumin, salt and chilli and combine well

Step Five

Transfer to a serving dish and garnish with parsley

Unsweetened peanut butters work best with this recipe, but using any you have at home will still be delicious
